Your main goal is to catch humans roaming the map, transform them into pumpkins, and deliver those pumpkins to the crypt. Delivering pumpkins increases the crypt's power, which unlocks new areas of the map for you to explore.

Since the largest pumpkins are extremely heavy, you should consider coordinating with a teammate to help you carry them back to the crypt. Working together makes hauling these massive specimens much easier during your co-op sessions.
