Nintendo Switch 2: The first Zelda that isn’t a “Zelda”… but it will be EPIC

⚠️ Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The next Zelda we’ll get… isn’t really a “Zelda” game—but it might just be the most epic Hyrule experience ever.

We’re talking about Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, the first Nintendo title announced for the Switch 2.

In a special Creator’s Voice feature, Nintendo—together with Ryota Matsushita (Koei Tecmo) and Yosuke Hayashi (AAA Game Studio)—revealed some exciting details about what we can expect from this new installment.

A Journey Back in Time

In Tears of the Kingdom, we witnessed Zelda being sent back in time to escape the destruction of Hyrule Castle at the hands of Ganondorf.

Through the Dragon’s Tears memory fragments, we learned some intriguing details about the ancient era Zelda was transported to—something straight out of Back to the Future… or even Dark.

In this new Hyrule Warriors, we’ll get to experience that era first-hand: an ancient Hyrule fighting for survival, and our heroes standing against Ganondorf’s armies in massive, all-out war.

Why Hyrule Warriors Is Pure Fun

What makes Hyrule Warriors special isn’t just the adrenaline-pumping gameplay, where you unleash massive attacks and face hundreds of enemies—it’s also the chance to see more of each character’s story, and how they each contribute to the greater cause of “saving the world”… or at least stopping it from falling into darkness.

Personally, my first experience was with Age of Calamity, and I found it epic. Unlike BOTW or TOTK, weapons don’t break mid-battle here. And the battles themselves? Massive. Explosive. Pure chaos—in the best way.

New Console, New Possibilities

One limitation of Age of Calamity was the original Switch’s hardware. The low FPS made it harder to fully enjoy the scale of the fights. But with Switch 2, those limitations will finally disappear.

Expect smooth performance, better visuals, and more immersion than ever before in a Zelda-related title.

Release Date

Nintendo hasn’t announced an exact release date yet—but we do know it’s scheduled for Winter 2025.

Are you ready to return to ancient Hyrule?
